Integrals!!!!

| | Comments (16)

Well, I'm finally over the hump of derivatives and into the promised land: integrals. It's slightly ironic that they teach the much more ancient calculus after the more modern, but I guess it makes sense because derivatives are easier than integrals. The profound power of the limit also struck me today. It doesn't seem very special at first, but it's quite amazing.

Who would ever teach integrals before derivatives?? That's like teaching multiplication before addition.

I feel like I'm being useless this summer, compared to you. You're taking calculus, working on cold fusion, and programming this blog, while I'm just playing computer games, going to the beach, and practicing piano. I guess I just know how to enjoy free time.

That you do.

I'm with you Colin, Adam likes to work too much. I suppose he may end up the happier for it, but I prefer a good day killing digital human beings then working on Cold Fusion. Shows how much I'll further mankind. =]

So which games do you all play online? I've been playing a lot of Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna recently.

Unreal Tournament, UT2k3, The Frozen Throne, And Brood War.

Me said:

Any UT2k4?

Evil Spoonman said:

No, not right now, machine isn't fast enough. However, when I get an upgrade, sure. Send me an E-Mail? I'll drop you a line when I get a new machine.

Adam Anderson said:

New machine...? I didn't realize you were formulating plans for a G5 already. That shows how quick-witted I am. But I suppose that your stint with Mike's G5 got you somewhat hooked. Wasn't that the "slow" (relatively speaking, relatively speaking) model too?

Me said:

Are UT2k4's system requirements that high? With detail on low, even I can run it smoothly.

Evil Spoonman said:

Yes Adam, that model is actually super slow for a G5. Single 1.8Ghz. 800Mhz Bus, 1Gb RAM, Nvidia board w/64Mb VRAM...

I'm looking to get a daul 2.0Ghz, 1Ghz Bus, 2Gb RAM, Radeon 9800 XT 256MB VRAM. FAST FAST FAST!!! It's gunna have more memory on the video board then your current machine has total... a bit behind the times aren't we.

As for you Me... It'll run, but no were near what I consider acceptable speeds (which is 30fps constant or more). At low detail, it'll certinally achieve 30-40fps, but not consistently, it'll drop to 10 occasionally which results in skips. That slow G5 I had was running 90fps constant on max settings. (fps for those who don't know are frames per second, bigger=better).

Just for the record, the cost of my new machine will be rather high: $3,428.00 if you buy the RAM from Apple, I don't intend to, it'll be 3grand straight without Apple RAM.

Me said:

You don't consider 24 FPS for an FPS acceptable? (FPS != FPS)
Why are you going to spend such an exhorbant amount of money? Do you realize how fast that piece of junk will depreciate? What will you be using it for? Gaming? With that kind of money you could build a basketball court or a giant chessboard.

Evil Spoonman said:

Perhaps a giant chessboard, but not more then a couple of feet. I intend to use it doing anything I want, which it will be able to handle. Right now switching apps is painfully slow, seeing as one of my RAM chips went bad and I am reduced to 384Mb. Although not rectifying this is mainly my procrastination. And because you have just reminded me, there goes some money twoards this machine, I'll behitting 1.2Gb hopefully within the next two weeks... =] as soon as I can get somebody who has a credit card to buy it for me off the web =]

Anyway, yes spoonman@appmagic.com, E-mail me Me. And I can explain everything more fully, it pains me to post it here, taking up so much space in this blog with out personal bantering.

Ted, it's the same reason many people buy Porsches and Ferraris. They're no better than a Corvette on roads because there are these things called speed limits. Half of owning a computer, like owning a car, is the ego inflation factor. That's incredibly important too. The spoonman's friends will literally be bribing him in order to see this superfluous behemoth until the next rev of G5 comes out... that'll be about 2 months, and then the machine's value will drop by about half. But hey, what's wrong with temporal gratification?

Me said:

What is wrong with temporal (ry?) gratification?! I'll tell you what's wrong with it!

Evil Spoonman said:

The funny thing about Adam's response is that isn't true. Almost nobody I know likes Mac's, they wouldn't come near it with an 8 foot pole. And what's wrong with having temporal gratification, hahahahaha, well, for one there isn't anything else in the computer industry. You can't be happy with the latest thing if that's what you strive to get. I never have, that machine isn't top-of-the-line, it's just really good. So I'm willing to dish out the money, providing I can make it. Now the thing is, by they time I make that money, there may be something better for the same price, in which case, I'll get that.
