The Crimes of Spammers
I'm just starting to realize that I'm getting a rather large amount of blog-spam: comments that are basically the equivalent to spam. At least the genitalia enlargement ones have stopped. Now we're just getting a bunch of online casino ones from Japan. It's hard work deleting them all.

So there are programs that post comments on websites advertising various products? That's much more creative than junk(y) electronic mail.

Just kidding... er, actually, do read my blog, I've a question for ya.
My mom and I would like you, Adam, and all others who are interested, to join our geek protest at the idiotic treatment of Bobby Fischer. Poor guy. He's an American hero, for goodness sakes. I'm sure you're familiar with the story, but for those who are not...
He became the first American world chess champion after beating this dude who had a very Russian chess sounding name in the 1970s. In 1992, against some lame embargo, he went to Yugoslavia for a rematch.
Now, if he would have lost, that would be another thing, but he kicked some serious rook and beat him again, and won a couple million dollars for it.
American Hero.
But noooo, we have to hunt the guy down and force him into running away and hide in various different countries. Finally, just recently, we caught the poor guy.
I want John Kerry to add it to his platform:
Pardon Bobby Fischer!!!
I agree Maxwell. I remember during the Fischer/Spasky chess match my brother and I followed every game in the newspaper, saving clippings of the moves. We actually studied them and made a scrap book. Fischer beating Spasky was a totally huge deal. When I read recently about how Fischer was under arrest and why, I was stunned. Like our government doesn't have real criminals to catch.
So I support your crusade and I'm not even a geek!
Fischer is a crazy wacko. I speak as someone who knows quite a bit about chess and history. The only thing he did was make Americans feel superior during the Cold War. I admit it is kinda unlucky for Fischer, but he is a crazy wacko and that itself makes me not care about him. Too many people think Fischer was a super duper chess player-in fact, the only reason he is more famous than say, Rustam Kasimdzhanov, is because he is Americans and too many Americans are self-centered.
Ted, I do wonder what qualifies to you as "super duper".
OK, so he's a crazy wacko. And, for an American hero, he sure doesn't like the United States (Remarks after 9/11: "I applaud the act...Fuck the U.S. I want to see the U.S. wiped out.")
His political views are as wacky as his character, but last time I checked that's not a crime in this country. The point is that his henious crime was playing a chess match. Engaging in a bit of civil disobedience by spitting on a document from the US State Department forbidding him to play in Yugoslavia and going anyway. As Helen said, like our government doesn't have any real criminals to catch.
Nice to have somebody who's not even a geek on the team, Helen, especially somebody who's not even a geek that made a scrapbook of the match ;)
I agree. Free Bobby Fischer now!! He may be a crazy anti-American wacko, but everyone knows that he was the real reason that America won the Cold War. All of this nonsense about the US and Reagan overpowering the USSR through economic and military jockying is entirely wrong. I spent a summer researching the topic. Let me tell you, it was the defeat of Spassky that caused a complete and total psychological demoralization of the entire Soviet Union. People just literally stopped working in 1972 in the USSR. Between 1971-5 sugarbeet production fell from 81.1 million tons to 76.0, and potatoes from 94.8 to 89.6. All major indicies fell short in the 5-year plan of 1975. Even steel production, the trademark product of the USSR didn't meet the expectations of the plan. Alec Nove titles his section of "An Economic History of the USSR" dealing with this era: "Brezhnev: from Stability to Immobility".
Where did I ever qualify myself as super-duper??? Please explain.
On a side note, the level of player goes Amateur, Expert, Master, International Master, Grand Master, Super Grand Master. As more players reach the Super GM level, we theorize that a new tier will have to be named. It is only logical that it will be named Super-Duper GM.
You should add an edit function, Adam. I forgot what "to" meant and subsequently left it out of my analysis of Maxwell's sentence. However, the note below my reply should help elucidate what qualifies as Super Duper.
Check out Akihabara news. They have a funny article on watermelons.
