You can really tell that French labor laws are messed up when we have to schedule our conference calls with France at 7 or 8 AM CDT because their government makes everyone go home at 5 PM.

This kind of thing puts the lie to the argument that restrictions on freedom of contract help workers by protecting them from abuse. Sometimes long or unusual hours are called for, and market mechanisms are better at sorting them out than governments. Giving control over contract to governments does this kind of thing. Always.
